Venue: Victoria Methodist Church, Clifton

Sibelius' seven symphonies represent the core of his musical approach and, by analysing their key features, the course aims to give an engaging portrait of the man and of his very distinct contribution to the world of post-Romantic music. Sometimes deeply expressive, sometimes ascetic and formal, Sibelius' voice was compelling and inimitable, eventually pointing the way to exciting paths for the Modernists to follow. As usual, the lectures will make use of both the piano and recorded excerpts as illustrations.
