Gustav Mahler (1860 – 1911) and Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949) are two of the most significant figures in late romantic music. This course will examine their work with
a particular emphasis on Mahler in this, the 150th anniversary of his birth. It will look at Mahler’s musical approach and the abiding influence he has had on music into the 21st century. It will also look at some of the reasons for the criticism he received in his own time
as opposed to his assured place in the modern repertoire. The second part of the course will focus on Strauss, particularly the tone poems and the operas, including Salome and Elektra.
All courses at Victoria Methodist Church will take place in the Lounge which is situated down the left hand side walkway of the main building.
